About stem cells

The basics

Two important types of stem cell are found in the body: hematopoietic stems cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Both types play an important role in the regeneration of the body's tissues and organs.

The most important role of hematopoietic stem cells is in creating the basic elements of the blood (those of the immune system, and white and red bloods cells) and assisting in the repair of injuries. However, they are not able to create the other cells and tissues of the body. Mesenchymal stem cells, on the other hand, have the potential to transform into skin, nerve, liver, heart and muscle cells, as well as bone or cartilage, and fatty, nerve and skin tissues.

The special properties of stem cells found in the body also make them suitable for medical uses. Hematopoietic stem cells are used routinely in the treatment of various conditions, and medical trials involving the use of both hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of countless other diseases are currently underway.
